The Jaya Ekadashi Vrat Katha is narrated in the Padma Purana, and it goes like this:

Once, Indra, the king of gods, was enjoying the Nandanvan garden with the celestial nymphs and the Gandharvas, the celestial singers. Among them were Pushpadant, his daughter Pushpavati, Chitrasen, his wife Malini, their son Pushpavan, and his son Malyavan. Pushpavati, a Gandharva maiden, fell in love with Malyavan and shot him with the arrow of love. She enchanted him with her beauty and charm. They started singing to please Indra, but they were so distracted by their love that they sang out of tune and rhythm. Indra noticed their love and felt insulted. He cursed them to become male and female ghosts in the mortal world and suffer for their sins.

They became very sad and went to the Himalayas, where they lived in misery. They had no sense of smell, taste, or touch. They suffered from extreme cold and hunger. They could not sleep at all. One day, the ghost asked his wife what sins they had committed in their previous lives to deserve such a dreadful fate. He said that they should not commit any more sins. They thought like this and spent their days like this.

By divine will, they came across Jaya Ekadashi, which falls on the bright fortnight of Magha month. On that day, they did not eat anything and did good deeds. They ate only fruits and flowers and sat under a peepal tree in the evening. The sun was setting. It was a very cold night. They hugged each other and lay down like dead bodies. They could not sleep that night.

By virtue of fasting and staying awake on Jaya Ekadashi, they were freed from their ghostly forms the next morning. They regained their beautiful Gandharva and Apsara forms and adorned themselves with fine clothes and ornaments. They went to heaven and greeted Indra. Indra was amazed to see them and asked them how they got rid of their curse. They told him the glory of Jaya Ekadashi Vrat. Indra praised them and welcomed them back to heaven. The gods showered them with flowers and praised them.
